The Future of European Research & Innovation: Eight Aspirational Directions for 2035

Across the world, artificial intelligence is changing how knowledge is created, shared and used. It opens possibilities for faster discovery, wider access to knowledge and new forms of collaboration, while raising questions about who controls the underlying infrastructures and how these changes affect researchers’ work.

Against this backdrop, this short consultation invites you to reflect on eight aspirational directions for European research and innovation by 2035. They are not predictions or detailed policy proposals, but possible features of a future European R&I system.

The directions draw on the aspirational scenario developed in the foresight study “The Futures of Researchers Careers: What Challenges for EU Policy?”, commissioned by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation under the Foresight on Demand framework contract.

For each direction, we invite you to assess:

  • How desirable would this development be for European R&I?

  • How feasible would it be to substantially achieve this development in Europe by 2035?

There are no right or wrong answers. We welcome different perspectives and are particularly interested in how your assessments of desirability and feasibility relate.

The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

This consultation was developed by Institutul de Prospectiva as part of the Horizon Europe project Eye of Europe, which aims to expand and strengthen the European research and innovation foresight community.
